Master Chief, Link, and When Less is More

Perpetually stoic and silent protagonists are pretty common in our video games, and many of our most beloved characters like John-117 or Link from the Legend of Zelda series are known more for their heroic actions than their stirring speeches. While hearing what my character has to say is part of the experience, sometimes less is more… I don’t think Halo would be quite as iconic if the Chief expressed himself as loudly, annoyingly, and immaturely as a character like Tidus from FFX. As much as I want my gaming characters to be relatable, in the best games the dialogue is used to maintain my immersion in the game and remain consistent with the character, even in the midst of the conflict they’re facing.

Our voices and words are powerful… they can be used to build up and inspire others, or they can become an inadvertent distraction from our intended purpose. Just as the primary character on the game cover represents the game we are about to play, each of us are ambassadors of Christ, representing Him in all we do. We are responsible for using our words to help and to heal, never to hurt or divide. Let’s use whatever platforms we possess to exclusively share His words of love, hope, and encouragement. The words we say, especially when enduring our own storms, show His grace when it matters most.

He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man of understanding is of a calm spirit. Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; when he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive. Proverbs 17:27-28

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one. Ephesians 4:6
