I have a confession to make… I’m not a big fan of “create your own own level” games like Super Mario Maker or even modes like Halo’s Forge or Fortnite’s Creator mode. It’s not them, it’s me… there isn’t anything wrong with those games, I’m just not very good at them and I don’t enjoy the process involved. The main reason I’m a fan of video games because I enjoy PLAYING them, reaping the benefits of individuals who are much better at this than I am. If I was responsible for building every game that I planned on playing, gaming wouldn’t even be a hobby of mine. It’s not that I haven’t tried… it’s just not my gift. My best efforts at making my own game always turn out to be embarrassingly unplayable garbage.
As followers of Christ, we don’t have to make our own way into His favor or build our own access to Him… which is fortunate, because we could never accomplish either one of those things through our own abilities or efforts. He has given us unearned grace that we must simply choose to embrace… and in the act of reaching out to Him in faith, we perform the only part of this that we were ever qualified to do. Let’s remind ourselves of this truth as often as we need to… Jesus is the Master Builder, and He is the Way to the Father. Our role isn’t to build our way to Him…. It is simply to trust in Him and follow.
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6
