Even my favorite games have portions in them that I’m not always “thankful” for… I don’t really enjoy “grinding” in Destiny, I don’t appreciate the time constraints in a Mario level, and I rarely express gratitude or thankfulness when an online game crashes in the middle of my team winning a match. But if I am only thankful for a game when everything goes my way, even my favorite games would be unappreciated. Sure, every game has its’ moments of unbearable load times or boring fetch quests, but part of loving these games is knowing that they will have their ups and downs… and deciding I will enjoy the full journey is the part that is up to me.
Christ came to give us peace, and when we are in a season of feeling anxious or worried we must remember that the prerequisite to peace is thankfulness. Having peace in our hearts is not the result of possessing everything that we wish we had or think we need… even receiving the answers to our prayers doesn’t give permanent peace, they just provide temporary relief until our next problem. True inner peace is only found when we have released our concerns in prayer to the Lord and made the decision to have a thankful heart in whatever circumstances we are currently in and however He chooses to answer.
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
