The Only Path to True Peace

Have you ever fallen down the “team-killing” vortex before? To my shame, I certainly have… a member of my team INTENTIONALLY throws a grenade at me or pushes me off a ledge, and instead of letting it go I return the favor the next time I see them. They respawn and reciprocate, and on and on it goes until one of us boots the other from the game and our team is down by twenty points with no hope of victory… all due to this idiotic crusade of vengeance between me and another member of my own team. And all we have to show for the time that we wasted and the energy we expended was hurting our own teammates who had absolutely nothing to do with our pointless, prideful, private war.

It is challenging to avoid retaliating when we’ve been hurt, but fighting fire with fire only creates collateral damage that impacts innocent people, not just our intended target. Let’s be patient and show kindness, even when others are unfair or unkind… the Lord is our avenger, and in His infinite wisdom He will fight these battles at the right time and in a better way than we ever could. Our opposition would love to see us destroy each other and ourselves in our quest to “make things right”, so let’s resist the urge to seek our own retribution. The only path to peace that will last is paved in undeserved mercy.

Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing. For “He who would love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit. Let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. 1 Peter 3:8-11
