Shining a Light When We Aren’t “Feeling It”

Games have become so immersive that it can be easy to forget that the concept of “light” in a video game is actually just a visual construct by the designer… the light doesn’t technically exist. Lines of code determine what appears to be brightly rendered versus what is shadowed or hidden, creating the illusion of dynamic lighting based on our current point of view. Even items such as flashlights and torches don’t actually illuminate the game environment… it is the code written by the developer that transforms those inert items into reflectors of light that guide us through the dark places. They just have to obey the code they were given… in darkness and light.

Sometimes I feel responsible for generating a light that I don’t always feel inside… but then I remember that I am not the source of the light that I was instructed to display. Followers of Christ aren’t expected to CREATE the light, but to SHINE it. We are merely a conduit, reflecting the light we receive and absorb from the Lord and freely sharing it with others. If our light feels dim, it doesn’t mean we need to try harder or “fake it until we make it”… it means we need to reconnect with the source of our light and get recharged. Let’s spend time in His light so we can reflect Christ… it’s the light we obediently shine in our darkness that leads others to Him.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16

For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. 2 Corinthians 4:6-7
