My character’s progression in a video game takes many forms… it may be from experience that is earned through the battles I have faced, storyline moments that unlock a new ability, or by intentionally developing specific skills. But there are also parts of my journey that cannot be unlocked until I have found and acquired specific pieces of equipment like a boomerang or a unique pair of boots… items that provide access to new areas and add skills that cannot be learned any other way. No matter how many skill points I invest in other areas, if I want to walk across the ocean floor and solve the Water Temple, I’m going to need some iron boots.
Spending time in God’s Word is not simply an act of spiritual discipline or something we do out of a sense of obligation… it is a place of growth where we gain the critical equipment we need to advance our “story”. If we find ourselves stuck behind an unbreakable wall or reach an impasse in our progression, let’s look to His Word for guidance on what we need to learn to move forward. Just as an ancient song played on Link’s ocarina opens sealed doors that can’t be opened any other way, these words are still very much alive with the power to speak directly to our present needs… and His timeless wisdom is the answer to each of our modern predicaments.
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
