Metroid, Samus, and a Helping Hand

Many of my favorite protagonists, like Samus from the Metroid series, are forced to face their challenges alone… no helpful teammates to support them in combat, no squad to belong to, and nobody to lean on when the game is on the line. While that makes for a uniquely challenging gameplay experience, it’s also a very lonely one, leaving very little margin for error. While Samus appears to do most of her best work alone, I can only imagine how much more effective she might be with a formidable ally by her side to bounce ideas off of or lend her a helping hand.

We serve a Savior who walked our entire path and battled every boss fight we will ever face… in His short sojourn on this planet, He endured a lifetime’s supply of the loneliness, sadness, heartbreak, disappointment, and frustration that we all feel. And He didn’t do that just for our salvation… He did it so we would never have to face ANY part of our battles without the support of Someone who truly understands what we are going through.  Whatever challenges we are up against today, Jesus is in the furnace with us… not as some invincible Being who is unable to relate to our problems, but as the ONLY One who truly can. He doesn’t always prevent our battles, but He’ll never let us face a fight alone.

Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted. Hebrews 2:17-18

For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:15-16
