The ability to “save” our game is a luxury that didn’t always exist in video games. There was a time that suffering defeat at the hands of an enemy didn’t merely stop our progress or send us back to a checkpoint… it ended the entire game, wiping out everything we’d accomplished up to that point and forcing us to start all over again. Saving our game removes the pain of starting over completely, but it doesn’t mean we are invincible or impervious to damage… we still face setbacks, endure painful losses, and fight some of the same battles multiple times before we are able to move forward. But because we can save our games, we can play with the confidence of a gamer who can bounce back after the situation says that our game is over.
The act of being “saved” by the Lord does not grant us complete immunity from damage in the battles we face, and it doesn’t automatically make us invincible from making mistakes… we’ll still make mistakes and experience a lapse in judgment on occasion. But we can go into each battle with the confidence that even when the circumstances say our game is over, if we repent of our sins He is faithful to pick us back up after we fall. He saved us knowing exactly how many times we would need His grace to set us back on the right track so we can finish our race.
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9
My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. 1 John 2:1-2
