The Problems With a “Paragon” Play-through

Playing through a game that features dynamic choices as a “hero” or “paragon” character often requires a lot more patience and effort than a “renegade” play-through… it requires applying extra effort to help others rather than simply ignoring their needs to focus on my own interests. Sometimes even the “good” choices that I make come back to smack me in the face, as I’m betrayed by characters that I previously showed trust and mercy to. My acts of kindness may not always be immediately rewarded with a more pleasant path, but taking the high road in these challenging circumstances often pays off much later in the game in ways I never would have anticipated… determining not only how my story concludes, but also the ending of others who I didn’t even realize would be impacted.

It’s easy to get frustrated when we show mercy and kindness to others only to have our efforts rejected and thrown back in our face… but just as Christ endured the insults and mockery of those He came to save, as His followers we cannot become weary of doing His work. We may never get to see the full impact of our “paragon play-through” on this side of life’s endgame, but I can guarantee we will never regret a kindness we have shown anyone on His behalf.  So let’s be kind to all… always.

But as for you, brethren, do not grow weary in doing good. 2 Thessalonians 3:13

Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing. 1 Peter 3:8-9
