Patience in the Tutorial

I’m not a very patient gamer… my time to play is pretty limited, so when I start a new game I just want to dive right in. Tutorials? Skip… this isn’t my first rodeo. Cutscenes explaining the story and providing valuable context? No thanks, I have stuff to do. But in my single-minded pursuit of rapid progress, I often get lost in the middle of a quest with no idea of what I am doing or why I’m doing it… I should have simply waited for the answers to come through the mechanics the game had created. The “waiting” I skipped was designed to prepare me for what is coming next.

Waiting for the Lord to answer an urgent prayer request is never easy, and if we aren’t careful we can become guilty of trying to force the answer we would prefer… or find ourselves accepting a counterfeit solution simply because it arrived faster. Our goal in prayer is not simply to get the answers we seek, but to allow the Lord to fully prepare us for His answer to our prayers. When Jesus prayed in Gethsemane, He didn’t get an answer that allowed that bitter cup to pass from Him… He received the strength to walk in the answer that He was given. Waiting on the Lord isn’t just about getting an answer; it’s allowing Him the time to develop our ability to receive it.

My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. Psalm 62:5-6

And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. Luke 22:41-43
