The Flood were truly horrifying enemies in Halo for multiple reasons, but it was their mode of attack that made them such a challenge to battle. Taken individually, they are fairly small and relatively weak, and from a distance they aren’t much of a threat… but that is why they never hunt alone. The Flood hide themselves in small, enclosed spaces, overwhelming their prey through a lethal combination of surprise and sheer numbers… and even Spartans can be overcome by their relentless assault.

One of the most potent attacks of the enemy is to come in like a flood and overwhelm us with a multitude of small problems that cause us to take our eyes off of the Lord, paralyzing us with battles that seem to be coming from all sides. If he can get us to feel outnumbered by the volume of challenges we are facing, even a tiny issue that would’ve never derailed us by itself can feel insurmountable. When these moments come, let’s stop and remember the magnitude of the God that we serve and keep our eyes fixed on Him through the flood we’re currently facing. No matter how large these waves look, He is still in control of the storm.

So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and His glory from the rising of the sun; when the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him. Isaiah 59:19
