When you play enough social multiplayer matches online it is inevitable… members of the opposing team that JUST finished playing a ferocious match against me get split up, with a few ending up on my team. And typically, these new “teammates” are still loyal to their real-life friends who are on the other side… and as a result they sabotage my team’s efforts to win through a combination of intentional “friendly” fire on my team, refusing to fire on their original squad mates, or other actions that intentionally cost our team points. Their loyalty is to their squad first… and honestly I would probably do the same thing.
This is a challenging verse of Scripture… it is NOT advocating that we are unkind, unloving, unsupportive, or completely disconnected from those who do not share our faith. The only way to reach others is to REACH out to them… but we also must understand that our loyalty to Christ supersedes all other loyalties. Our priorities are guided by our commitment to the Lord, and those who haven’t made that commitment are led by competing priorities. Let’s consider our alignments carefully.
And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will. 2 Timothy 2:24-26
Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 2 Corinthians 6:14
