Capturing the Flag: Leaving the Past Behind

Halo multiplayer matches contain some of my greatest gaming triumphs as well as many of my most embarrassing failures… sure, I have captured my fair share of flags over the years, but I’ve also fallen off of plenty of maps and tasted my own rocket’s splash damage more times than I care to admit. But the beginning of a new match starts me off with a clean slate… and I’ve found that if I want to succeed in this new opportunity, I have to leave my previous mistakes in the past and move forward. While it’s important to learn from those errors so I don’t replicate them in the future, continuing to dwell on what’s behind me prevents me from being fully present for the task in front of me.

We’ve all made sinful mistakes in our past, and no matter how much we regret them, we can’t go back and change them. But Jesus didn’t die for our sins so we can continue to carry them around in our heads… He has offered a fresh start to every repentant soul who will receive it. In the eyes of the Father our sins have already been forgotten, so let’s purge them from our memory, too. Today’s a new round, the score is 0-0… and that flag isn’t going to capture itself.

Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:12-14

The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy. He will not always strive with us, nor will He keep His anger forever. He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished us according to our iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:8-12
