Pray Without Ceasing: Even Spartans Have to Recharge Their Shields

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a fairly reckless Halo player… the knowledge that I’m playing as a Spartan soldier covered from head to toe in powerful Mjolnir armor as well as an energy shield to protect me causes me to feel a little bit more invincible than I really am. I often dive headfirst into battles that would’ve benefited from a little more finesse… and when I hear that beeping sound in my helmet reminding me to fall back and recharge my shields, I have two choices. I can ignore that warning sound and hope that I outlast my adversaries (which rarely works), or I can pull back and allow my shields to recharge, taking advantage of the protection that got me here in the first place.

As followers of Christ, we are not immune to temptation… and the armor that we’ve been given requires frequent recharges throughout our day to keep us protected. If Jesus Himself consistently disengaged from His battles to get away and pray to the Father, then we will certainly need to do the same. Failure to pray is an opening to stray, so let’s step away and recharge our shields throughout our day… even Spartans take a knee when it’s needed.

And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren”. Luke 22:31-32

Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Matthew 26:41
