I have fallen for it more times than I care to admit… I have heard and followed the siren’s call of a powerful, game-changing weapon laying open and exposed in the middle of the battlefield, practically BEGGING for me to come pick it up and use it to save the day for my team. With the best of intentions I raced to grab it and turn the tide of the battle… but as soon as I picked it up I realized that the enemy was simply using it as bait to lure me into a trap… and that weapon was empty all along.
We’ve all heard seemingly innocent phrases like “The heart wants what the heart wants” or “Follow your heart”… but the truth is that our heart is not a reliable decision maker and is frequently responsible for much unnecessary and preventable heartache in life. The Father sees beyond our heart’s desire and into the painful, unintended outcomes that following it will result in… and if we yield our stubborn hearts to His eternal wisdom we will avoid the snares of our enemy. Let’s set aside our instincts and good intentions and listen for the Lord’s voice on the battlefield… His restrictions may be protecting us in ways we cannot see.
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it? I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings. Jeremiah 17:9-10
Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the hearts. Proverbs 21:2
