The most memorable video game stories I’ve ever played always involved a massive amount of very painful, VERY personal challenges for the protagonist to overcome. But the reason these stories are so compelling is because the writers of the plot used these events to not only grow and define MY character, but all the various characters I would interact with along the way as well. The self-sacrificial path my destiny requires wasn’t just MY story… it impacted the lives of every explorer I met (and some I didn’t) and changed their lives as well.
Even Jesus Himself endured incomparable trials, challenges, and suffering during His short life on this planet… but it was through His obedience to endure that painful journey that He is the “Author” of of our salvation. It was through Christ’s submissive humanity, not just His omnipotent deity, that we are saved. We will also face massive obstacles during our journey, but these aren’t punishments or a lack of His care for us. These are our “stories” we are writing, and it is our faithful obedience to Him through our personal stories that the Father uses to lead others to His saving grace.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. Psalm 34:19
Though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him. Hebrews 5:8-9
