At multiple points in Kingdom Hearts we are given access to “guest characters” who can join our party and help us out for a while… but they don’t get to travel with us beyond the world they were designed for. Ariel, Beast, Tarzan and the others became critical helpers during one part of our story, but as we moved on to the next level they stayed behind in their own. While it would be nice to bring Beast’s power or Ariel’s healing abilities with us into our next chapter, we have new friends to meet and they have different missions to complete. They didn’t stop caring about us… their destiny simply lies on a different path than ours.

The parting of paths in our lives is never easy, especially when those who helped us through some of our most challenging times are either unable or unwilling to join us on the next leg of our journey. But just as John the Baptist wasn’t meant to be present for the entirety of Christ’s earthly ministry and Paul and Barnabas parted ways to pursue different paths, our stories will be filled with both friendships and farewells… so let’s enjoy our intersections as long as they last and wish each other well when they end.

To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven: a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing. Ecclesiastes 3:1, 4-5
