Goofy: Ignoring Insults and Kindness as a Strength

The Kingdom Hearts series is packed full of serious characters dealing with complicated existential issues, and right in the middle of all of this angst and turmoil stands Goofy… a kind and gentle soul who prefers a shield to defend his friends over a weapon to attack his foes. But Goofy’s kindness is not a weakness… it is actually in his refusal to allow others to dictate his emotional responses, alter his demeanor, or determine his actions that shows he is one of the strongest characters in the game. As others brood and complain at the unfairness of their treatment and swap insults for insults, Goofy stays true to his North Star, remaining cheerful and kind in the darkest of times.

In a world where becoming “offended” is easier than ever and swapping insults has become a sport, we are called to rise above our fleshly desires to respond in anger and demonstrate Christ’s compassion instead. As He carried His cross, He endured the insults that were hurled at Him without attacking back… instead He asked the Father to forgive their ignorance. It isn’t a sign of weakness to overlook insults, it is where we reveal the strength of His Spirit in us.

Therefore I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in distresses, in persecutions, in difficulties, in behalf of Christ; for when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:10

A person’s discretion makes him slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense. Proverbs 19:11
