Viva Piñata: Broken Jars of Clay

I’ve never played a game quite like Viva Piñata, a title that requires a level of sacrifice that I’d prefer not to pay… not a sacrifice of time, but of my precious piñatas. See, in order to bring new piñatas to my garden, my previous ones must be “broken” to generate the candy that attracts other piñatas to my garden. It’s a high price, but a necessary one… because my goal isn’t to have just one happy piñata, but to grow my garden until it is full. None of them are of higher or lower importance, they just all serve different purposes… and growing the garden requires their willingness to become broken in order for the entire family to become complete.

Each of us as followers of Christ are the fragile jars of clay He has chosen to inhabit on this planet, but it’s typically in our broken state that His grace is both demonstrated and shared with others most effectively. He doesn’t create these painful events in our lives, but He does use them to bring others to the garden… taking these bitter experiences to generate and share the sweet candy of shared brokenness that only a similarly hurt piñata would understand and appreciate in their time of desperate need.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed- always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. 2 Corinthians 4:7-10

Who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 2 Corinthians 1:4
