On the surface, Gears of War is just another third-person shooter in a saturated market… but the familial bond that exists between the “Cog” soldiers is the beating heart behind the over-the-top violence. Despite their unique backgrounds, these soldiers were brothers and friends in every sense of the word, and behind the backdrop of a horrific war for survival lies a story of an unbreakable brotherhood. While they were treated by their leadership like little more than useful pawns on the battlefield, to each other they were friends to the bitter end.

In the various battles I’ve faced in my life, there are many times I’ve felt like just a cog in the machine of a much bigger war… and as chaos erupted that caused pain and loss, it’s easy to feel insignificant or forgotten. But we aren’t mere chess pieces on a board in His eyes, and we’re more than just soldiers for Christ in this war against spiritual darkness… He calls us FRIENDS. We’re a band of brothers and sisters chosen to share in this sacrificial journey with Him… one that He walked for us first, paving the way with His own blood. We aren’t alone… when He calls our name, He calls us friend.

Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. John 15:13-15

And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God. James 2:23
