Names in games are pretty important… a great deal of money and research are poured into determining the best possible title for the game and the main character’s name. Can you imagine if the iconic Halo series was titled  “Stinky John and the Space Doughnut”? We wouldn’t take either of them very seriously, and it is unlikely they would have had the same degree of success.  Has the Master Chief smelled badly in all that armor?  Probably.  Does the Halo ring look like a space doughnut?  Yep.  But they rejected those definitions for a better name.

We have all faced our share of struggles and battles… and sadly, many of us allow those negative and painful experiences to define us and determine our remaining path in life.  As redeemed believers in Christ, the Lord doesn’t call us by the names of our public shame or private suffering… we have been given a NEW name.  Experiencing misery and tragedy is an unfortunate and often unavoidable part of our lives, but allowing ourselves to be defined or limited by these events is still our choice. Let’s define ourselves by the names our Father has given us… His beautiful, overcoming children.

You shall be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord will name. You shall no longer be termed Forsaken, nor shall your land any more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for the Lord delights in you. Isaiah 62:2b, 4a

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17
