I had never previously considered the proper use of shadows in a video game until the first time I played Metal Gear Solid on PS1. The need to survey my environment and find the safest position to proceed was the exact opposite of my tried and true “run-and-gun” approach that had served me well in my other gaming experiences. Much to my surprise, the environmental obstacles that I previously viewed as a hindrance were actually designed to provide the cover I needed… the shadows that they cast helped me advance without detection, avoid unnecessary battles when possible, and always presented the safest place to be when I was engaged in combat.
The challenges and battles we face in life are not due to the ABSENCE of God in our lives, but serve as a reminder of our need for His PRESENCE in our lives. He is the Lord of the storm even though He didn’t cause it, and if we want to walk on these troubled waters we must allow these battles to push us TOWARDS Him, not away. It is when we have chosen to walk close enough to be in His shadow that we can experience His peace in the midst of the storm.
Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me! For my soul trusts in You; and in the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge, until these calamities have passed by. Psalm 57:1
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. John 14:27, John 16:33
