The infamous tagline for the original Fable was “for every choice, a consequence”… and over the course of the series, each decision made in the game, from those that seemed small and insignificant to those that clearly affected the endgame, had repercussions that impacted the player’s experience. Sure, we could restore a previous save file or even restart the game if we didn’t like the outcome of a specific choice, but if we chose to repeat the same decision that we regretted we’d see the same unwanted outcome play out. Being able to reset the game didn’t mean we could keep making bad decisions and avoid the consequences… it gave us the wisdom to not make them again.
Christ came to deliver us from more than just the consequences of our past sins… His Spirit living in us gives us the wisdom to reject sinful temptations and avoid the ramifications of our poor choices by no longer making them in the first place. Choosing to follow Him doesn’t mean that we’ll always get it right, and His grace is there to restore us if we fall. But every sinful choice hurts someone… He gave us the power to prevent the pain before it even starts.
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Romans 6:1-2
Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace. Romans 6:12-14
