Tetris: Unwanted Blocks or “Good Gifts”?

While I’ve always enjoyed playing Tetris, my least favorite part is waiting for the right block to come my way. Whether I have painstakingly crafted the perfect setup for a “line” to clear multiple rows or simply need a specific shape to finally appear, sometimes it feels like the game knows exactly what I want and refuses to give it to me. Block after block drop down, none of which are the ones I wanted… but as the pile of unwanted blocks accumulated, I realized something. By deciding what I wanted in advance, I didn’t recognize the good gifts that were being given to me for what they are. Instead, I resented and ignored them because they didn’t meet my concept of “good gifts”.

The Lord only gives us good gifts… it’s in His nature. But if we have a specific idea of what a “good gift” is that doesn’t align with our best destiny, it will feel like His gifts aren’t as “good” as they truly are. A good gift is unappreciated when received by a heart that has the wrong expectations… so instead of looking at other people’s gifts and building our hopes on those, let’s look at the bricks He has given us and ask Him to guide us on what we are building today.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. James 1:17

What man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! Matthew 7:9-11
