Donkey Kong: From Villain to Hero

Donkey Kong might be best known for his most recent actions as the hero of the Donkey Kong Country series of games, but that’s not how his story began… he started out as the original villain of the Nintendo universe before finding his way to a better path for both himself and his family. Sure, he did some pretty despicable things before he turned things around, but he was destined for a far better narrative than his flawed first chapter indicated. Rather than “cancel” DK because of his past, we enjoy his new arc as a former villain reborn as a hero.

Through our selfish decisions or our accidental actions, we have all been the unintentional villain in somebody’s story… but if the grace of God was sufficient to turn a former persecutor of Christians into the greatest missionary of all time (the Apostle Paul), then we ALL have a redemptive arc we can choose to embrace as well. The body of Christ is full of former lost causes and hopeless cases who placed their broken story into His nail-scarred hands so He could turn us around. We’re all former villains saved by grace and reborn to serve… so don’t disqualify yourself. He cancels sin, not sinners.

For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. 1 Corinthians 15:9-10

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:8-10
