The Duck Hunt Dog: Adding Insult to Injury

The game villain who had the greatest impact on me at a young age wasn’t Ganon, Bowser, or even Ridley… it was the Duck Hunt Dog. This nameless antagonist wasn’t a problem until I missed the mark… but as soon as I made a mistake, he immediately popped up to point his finger at me and laugh at my misfortune. In my frustration, I would even click my zapper at him in a feeble attempt to silence him… but the Duck Hunt Dog was invincible. Other gaming villains could be defeated even if my approach wasn’t flawless, but Duck Hunt Dog demanded a level of perfection I simply didn’t possess.

Every one of us miss the mark in life, and as followers of Christ and fellow recipients of His grace we are called to forgive, repair broken fellowship, and restore our repentant brothers and sisters in Christ. In a world full of “Duck Hunt Dogs” who rush to mock other’s failures and judge those who’ve fallen, we are called to show the same grace that the Lord has shown to each of us…  not add insult to injury. All who have fallen to sin have suffered enough… His church should be known as the place where all who seek forgiveness and grace will find it.

So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.” John 8:7-11

Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:1-2
