My original console gaming experiences were pretty linear affairs… games like Mario simply took me from one level to the next, while Zelda gave me a rudimentary feeling of exploration while still guiding me along a predetermined path. But then came Mega Man, a game that boldly let me choose every possible path from the very beginning… freedom that was both a blessing and a curse. Sure, I could face the levels in whatever order I wanted, but if I didn’t face and defeat Ice Man before taking on Fire Man, I wouldn’t possess the abilities I needed to succeed. Even in a non-linear game, there is always an optimal path if we will search for it.
While the Father has given each of us free will to pursue anything our heart desires, choices that we make outside of His will always places us in predicaments we weren’t meant to face in this manner. His perfect plan for our lives will still feature challenges, but when we surrender to His guidance we will face them in His divine order, allowing Him to fully prepare us for them in advance. If we get in over our heads today, let’s return to Him in prayer and submit to His will so He can direct us back to His path.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and depart from evil. Proverbs 3:5-7
The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholds him with His hand. Psalm 37:23-24
