There are few lines in cinema more iconic than when Admiral Ackbar suddenly realized that he and his fleet had been lured into a dogfight with a FULLY operational Death Star and he barked out, “It’s a TRAP”! Even though he and his allies possessed the “moral high ground” and were on the “right side” of the conflict, countless lives were lost in a battle that could have been fought in a different manner or under different circumstances. Sure, the war was still won and the Death Star was still destroyed, but if the Rebels wouldn’t have underestimated their enemy’s capabilities, they might’ve achieved the same or even a better result with far less collateral damage.
In a world where verbal conflicts are easier to engage in than ever before, we should follow the discretion shown by Christ when He chose to exclusively engage in discourses that were on His Father’s agenda, not His adversary’s. He routinely avoided or refused to engage in the “traps” that were designed to distract from His mission… so let’s follow in His footsteps and deny the temptation to enter into these fruitless battles unless He specifically told us to do so.
This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear. So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. John 8:6-8
Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one. Colossians 4:5-6
