Lando’s friendliness and hospitality in “The Empire Strikes Back” hid a dark secret… he had made a “deal with the devil” to surrender Han and Leia to Darth Vader in exchange for his continuing freedom and the eventual safe release of his friends. But this “deal” quickly became more than he bargained for, and as he came to the painful realization that “this deal is getting worse all the time”, he had a choice to make. Instead of remaining on a path that promised pleasure for an ever-increasing price that he couldn’t continue to pay, Lando chose to make a better deal… and he was reborn as the heroic General he was always meant to be.

The little “compromises” we make with sinful temptations in our lives always contain hidden “costs”… and as people like Samson found out, these deals only get worse over time until they take everything we love away from us. Rather than enjoy the poisonous fruits of sin for a season, let’s close the door on every tempting thought that makes promises it can’t keep and costs more than the price tag. The best deal we can ever make is to deny what we can’t keep to receive a gift we could never afford.

Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward. Hebrews 11:25-26
