Star Wars: KOTOR and My Own Worst Enemy

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is easily my favorite game of all time, with an epic story that takes the classic “amnesiac protagonist” gaming trope and spins it into gold. (SPOILER ALERT!) When the game finally reveals that my character with memory loss wasn’t a Jedi at all, but was actually the brainwashed villainous Darth Revan that I’ve spent the entire game chasing, my mind was blown. I was LITERALLY my own worst enemy… I just didn’t know it at the time. But once I realized who I truly was, the choice was mine… would I choose to return to that dark path, or take this opportunity to tell a new story in spite of who I was inside?

In our real world we do have very real spiritual enemies, but our most dangerous adversary is hidden within each of us… our own hearts. I’ve let myself down far more than any other villain in my story, and despite my best efforts I can’t subdue that darkness on my own. Even in the life of a follower of Christ, the enemy within will be present for the duration of our story… but when we intentionally choose to submit to His daily leadership, we can resist the pull of the dark and walk in the light of our true destiny.

For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! Romans 7:18-19, 24-25a

Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. James 4:1,8
