Anakin, Darth Vader, and the Grace by Which We Stand

Anakin Skywalker’s story arc contains one of the most stunning and painful falls from grace in cinematic history… from a noble and heroic Jedi Knight who performed countless acts of selfless bravery to transforming into the very face of evil he had been chosen to destroy in the galaxy. If we didn’t know he was destined to become Darth Vader when watching the Clone Wars series, we wouldn’t have believed he would one day dual his best friend to the death… multiple times. But the story is about more than just Anakin’s choice… he is one of countless thousands who errantly followed the siren call of the Empire and became the villains of the story in a way they never intended to be.

We are all one selfish decision in life away from becoming the villains in someone else’s story as well as our own… but while our choices may have resulted in some undesirable outcomes, a full redemptive arc is available to even a fallen Jedi turned Sith. Before we judge another too harshly, let’s remember we’re all only standing because of the unearned grace we’ve received from Christ… the same grace with the power to turn even the darkest heart back to the light.

This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life. 1 Timothy 1:15-16

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Romans 5:1-2
